Project Overview
The idea of "To Infinity, And Beyond!" is to take publicly available data from Openreach and plot it on a map to show when/where rollouts of the BT Infinity Fibre-based broadband product will be.
It is important to note that the prototype of the map below has only had a limited dataset plotted due to the sheer number of points. Around 20 exchanges from each list were selected at random and their location data was pulled manually. In order to do this with the entire dataset, it will be necessary to automate this process, which has been partially done by setting up a ScraperWiki.
Rollout Map
Key:
- Enabled for FTTC
- Will be enabled for FTTC soon
- Earmarked for Future FTTC enablement
- No FTTC rollout data available
Data Sources
The data gathered for this was made publicly available by Openreach as part of the rollout scheme for FTTC/FTTP and the associated broadband services across the UK.
Data for the Postcodes of exchanges was sourced manually from SamKnows, using the Exchange ID provided by Openreach. This then allowed the points to be plotted on a map individually on a postcode-centeric basis.
"To Infinity, And Beyond!" has been created by Isabell Long and Joe O'Dell as part of Young Rewired State 2011.
